Fly to Ercan if the connection is convenient and the fare is comparable: you land thirty-five minutes from Kyrenia with no checkpoint and no complications.
Fly to Larnaca if the direct flight is significantly cheaper or shorter: you add about one hour forty-five minutes on the ground, which is usually less than the layover you would otherwise spend in Istanbul.

Getting there: flights compared
Ercan (ECN) has no direct flights from outside Turkey. Every route connects through Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir or Antalya, which means a change of plane and a layover that can run from an hour to most of a day.
Larnaca (LCA) takes direct flights from across Europe, including a dense schedule from UK airports. A direct flight from London is around four and a half hours; the same journey via Istanbul to Ercan is typically seven to nine hours door to door once the connection is counted.
The comparison that matters is total travel time from your front door to your hotel, not flight time alone.

For travellers coming from Turkey, Ercan wins outright and there is nothing to discuss. For travellers coming from the UK or Europe, Larnaca is often faster in total despite the longer transfer.
Cost: the flight is only half of it
Direct flights to Larnaca on low-cost carriers are frequently cheaper than connecting fares to Ercan, sometimes substantially so in shoulder season.
Against that, a Larnaca to Kyrenia transfer costs more than an Ercan to Kyrenia transfer, because it is three times the distance and crosses a checkpoint. The transfer difference rarely erases a large flight saving, but it can erase a small one — so compare the two totals, not the two fares.
For a family of four the arithmetic tilts further towards Larnaca, because the flight saving multiplies by four while the transfer is a single per-vehicle price that does not change.
The border crossing: how much does it really matter?
Less than most people expect. Crossing points have been open to travellers since 2003, the stop normally takes a few minutes, there is no visa and no fee, and your passport is recorded on a slip rather than stamped.
The one thing that does matter is booking a vehicle licensed to cross. Rank taxis at Larnaca frequently are not, and a driver who stops at the checkpoint leaves you walking through the buffer zone with your luggage. A pre-booked cross-border transfer is one car and one driver the whole way.
If you plan to hire a car, check the rental terms separately — many Republic of Cyprus companies restrict insurance across the line, which is a genuine constraint rather than a formality.
When Ercan is clearly the better choice
- You are travelling from Turkey, where Ercan is direct and everything else is absurd.
- You have young children and want the shortest possible drive after the flight.
- You are arriving in the small hours and want thirty-five minutes to bed rather than one hour forty-five.
- Someone in your party has limited mobility and a border stop is an unwanted complication.
- You are staying in Kyrenia, Çatalköy or Nicosia, where Ercan is genuinely close.
When Larnaca is clearly the better choice
- The direct fare is meaningfully cheaper, especially for a family or group.
- You want to avoid a connection and a second security queue entirely.
- You are combining north and south in one trip — a few days in Ayia Napa or Limassol with a week in Kyrenia.
- Your dates fall outside the Turkish domestic schedule that Ercan depends on.
- You are heading to Famagusta or İskele, where the Larnaca crossing at Beyarmudi is quicker than the Kyrenia route.
What about Paphos?
Paphos (PFO) is worth checking only if the fare is dramatically better or you want to see western Cyprus on the same trip. The transfer to Kyrenia is around two hours forty-five minutes, which is a long drive at the end of a flight.
