Getting to North Cyprus from the UK

There are no direct flights from the UK to North Cyprus

Ercan (ECN) is the airport inside North Cyprus, and no airline flies to it directly from Britain. Every route into Ercan connects through Turkey — usually Istanbul, sometimes Ankara, Izmir or Antalya. That is a political and regulatory situation rather than a commercial one, and it has held for decades.

So a UK traveller has two realistic shapes of journey. Connect through Turkey and land inside North Cyprus, or fly direct to Larnaca or Paphos in the south of the island and cross by road.

Neither is obviously better, and the right answer depends on your departure airport, your dates and who you are travelling with. What matters is knowing that the choice exists before you start comparing fares, because the cheapest-looking flight and the shortest total journey are frequently not the same booking.

Which UK airports actually work

Larnaca and Paphos are served directly from a wide spread of UK airports, and the choice is much broader than most people expect — it is not a London-only route.

Schedules shift with the season and the year, so treat this as the shape of the market rather than a timetable. Winter thins out considerably outside London and Manchester; summer opens up most regional airports.

For Ercan, your departure airport matters less — you are connecting through Turkey regardless, so the question is which UK airport has a convenient onward connection rather than which has a direct flight.

The ground leg is the part people forget to price

A flight comparison site will show you Larnaca as cheaper and faster than a connecting flight to Ercan. What it will not show you is that Larnaca is in the south, and your hotel is probably not.

From Larnaca Airport the road journey is about an hour to Nicosia, an hour and a half to Famagusta, and one hour forty-five to Kyrenia. From Paphos it is nearly three hours to Kyrenia. From Ercan, Kyrenia is thirty-five minutes.

That gap is the real trade-off, and it is worth costing properly rather than discovering at arrivals. A transfer from Larnaca to Kyrenia costs meaningfully more than the same journey from Ercan, simply because it is three times the distance and crosses a checkpoint.

Landing at Larnaca and crossing to the north

This is the journey most UK visitors end up making, and it is the one where booking the wrong thing causes real problems.

A taxi from the rank outside Larnaca arrivals is licensed in the Republic of Cyprus. Many are not permitted or insured to cross into the north. Some will take you as far as the checkpoint and stop, which leaves you walking through the buffer zone with your luggage to find a second car on the other side — at whatever price is available, at whatever hour you happen to have landed.

A pre-booked cross-border transfer is one vehicle and one driver from the arrivals hall to your door. The crossing itself is routine: passports are checked at the window, there is no visa and no fee, and it normally takes a few minutes. Every passenger needs a valid passport, including children — a UK national ID is not sufficient.

What the whole trip costs, in pounds

We quote in pounds sterling, which removes one variable for UK travellers: the price you agree in March is the price you pay in July, regardless of what the Turkish lira does in between. You can still settle in euros, dollars or lira if you prefer.

For the ground leg, the number that matters is per vehicle, not per person. A family of four pays the same as a couple for the same car, so the effective cost per head falls as your party grows — which is why the Larnaca route, despite being longer, often works out fine for a family and poorly for a solo traveller.

There is no night surcharge. That is not a small detail on this route: UK flights frequently land at Larnaca late in the evening, and connecting flights into Ercan via Istanbul routinely arrive between eleven at night and four in the morning.

Timing your transfer around a UK flight

For the return leg, work backwards generously. From Kyrenia to Larnaca Airport is one hour forty-five plus the crossing, and airlines want you at check-in well before a UK-bound departure — so an early morning flight home means a pickup in the dark. Book the return when you book the arrival: it costs less as a pair and it guarantees a vehicle at an hour when finding one is genuinely difficult.

What UK visitors most often get wrong

• Assuming Larnaca is close to the north. It is a substantial road journey, not a short hop.
• Booking a hire car in the south expecting to drive it north — check the insurance terms first.
• Bringing a national ID instead of a passport for a child, which stops you at the checkpoint.
• Quoting the hotel as just 'Kyrenia' or 'Esentepe' — many properties sit on unnamed lanes and need a map pin.
• Forgetting that driving is on the left, which is familiar, but the mountain road from Ercan at night is not.
• Leaving the return transfer until you arrive, then discovering there is no car available at 4am in Bafra or İskele.
