Most direct flights from the UK land at Larnaca, in the south, while most British visitors are heading north. The Larnaca to North Cyprus transfer bridges that gap — and it is the one journey on the island where booking the wrong kind of taxi can genuinely leave you stranded at a checkpoint.
Why so many North Cyprus visitors land at Larnaca
Ercan is the airport for North Cyprus, but every flight into it connects through Turkey. For travellers from the UK, Ireland and much of Europe, that means a change of plane and several extra hours.
Larnaca (LCA), in the Republic of Cyprus, takes direct flights from dozens of European cities and is frequently both cheaper and faster overall — even after the road journey north. That trade-off is why the Larnaca to North Cyprus transfer is one of the busiest routes we run.
How the border crossing actually works
The crossing is far less dramatic than it sounds. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, and crossing points between the Republic and the north have been open to travellers since 2003. Thousands of people cross every day.
Your transfer will use one of two checkpoints depending on the destination: Metehan (Ayios Dometios) on the western edge of Nicosia for Kyrenia and the north coast, or Beyarmudi (Pergamos) for Famagusta, İskele and the east.
In practice you stop, hand over your passport, it is checked and handed back, and you drive on. It usually takes a few minutes. There is no visa to buy and no stamp in your passport — arrival is recorded on a separate slip. Your driver handles the vehicle paperwork and insurance, which is the part that requires a licence you do not have.
The critical detail: not every taxi can cross
This is the point that catches people out, and it is worth being blunt about.
A rank taxi picked up outside Larnaca arrivals is licensed in the Republic of Cyprus. Many are not permitted, insured or willing to cross into the north. Some will take you as far as the checkpoint and stop there, leaving you to walk across the buffer zone with your luggage and find a second car on the other side — at whatever price is available, at whatever time it happens to be.
A pre-booked cross-border transfer is a different arrangement entirely: one vehicle, one driver, correct insurance for both sides, from the Larnaca arrivals hall to your door in the north. No change of car, no walking, no second negotiation.

What you need to carry
- A valid passport for every passenger, including children — an ID card is not sufficient for the crossing for most nationalities.
- Your booking reference, which the driver will also hold.
- Nothing else. There is no fee to cross, no visa to purchase and no form to complete in advance.
If you are hiring a car in the south later in your trip, check the rental agreement separately: many Republic of Cyprus hire companies restrict or void insurance across the line, which is a different question from a licensed transfer and a common source of expensive surprises.
Larnaca or Ercan: which should you book?
If a direct flight to Larnaca is meaningfully cheaper or shorter than a connecting flight to Ercan, take it and book the cross-border transfer. Adding one hour forty-five to your door-to-door time is usually better than adding a four-hour layover in Istanbul.
If prices are similar, Ercan wins on simplicity — you land thirty-five minutes from Kyrenia with no checkpoint at all. Families with young children and anyone arriving in the small hours tend to find that worth a premium.
Either way, book the ground leg before you fly. Larnaca arrivals at midnight is not the place to start working out how to reach the north.
